Deicing and
winter operating costs

Cold weather adds steps to a departure that can affect cost and timing. This guide explains deicing and the other ways winter shapes a charter.

The basics

Why deicing matters

Before takeoff in freezing conditions, ice, frost, or snow must be removed from the aircraft, and a protective fluid is often applied so the surfaces stay clean until rotation. This is a safety requirement, not an optional extra, and it is carried out by the airport or the handling provider.

The charge depends on the size of the aircraft and how much fluid the conditions demand, so a heavy snowfall costs more than a light frost.

Other winter costs

Hangarage and ground services

In hard weather an operator may keep the aircraft in a heated hangar overnight to avoid a long deicing session in the morning, which can carry a hangarage charge. Snow clearance and longer ground times can also add to handling.

These are usually modest against the flight cost, but they are worth anticipating for winter trips to cold airports.

Timing

How winter affects schedule

Deicing and weather holds can move a departure slot, so winter trips benefit from a little schedule flexibility. Mountain and northern airports can also close briefly for snow clearance.

Building in margin around connections and meetings reduces the stress of a weather delay.

What to ask

Ask whether deicing is included or estimated and how it would be charged if conditions require it on the day. Confirm whether hangarage is recommended for your dates and airport.
