International handling and
landing fees

Cross border charter brings airport charges that domestic trips do not. This guide explains handling and landing fees, what drives them, and how to read them in a quote.

The basics

What handling and landing fees are

Landing fees are charged by the airport for use of the runway and infrastructure, usually scaled to the weight of the aircraft. Handling fees are charged by the ground service provider at the private terminal for marshalling the aircraft, loading baggage, arranging fuel, and meeting passengers. On an international trip these sit alongside the flight cost rather than inside the hourly rate.

Because they are set locally, the same aircraft can attract very different charges at two airports. A busy primary hub typically costs more than a quieter regional field nearby.

Why they vary

What drives the amount

Aircraft weight is the main lever for landing fees, so a heavy jet pays more than a light jet at the same airport. Handling scales with the services you use and the airport tariff. Time of day, weekend or holiday operations, and peak demand can each add a surcharge.

Airports in major financial and leisure centres tend to price higher than secondary fields a short distance away, which is one reason an advisor may suggest an alternate airport within easy reach of your destination.

Customs, navigation, and other line items

International arrivals can carry customs and immigration handling, security charges, and navigation fees levied by the airspace authority. Some countries apply a passenger or departure charge. These are passed through at cost and itemised in a full quote.

Overflight and navigation charges depend on the route and the countries crossed, so two trips of similar length can differ if they pass through different airspace.

What to ask

Ask for the all in trip price with airport charges itemised rather than only the hourly rate, so you can compare quotes fairly. Confirm whether handling, landing, customs, and navigation are included or estimated, and whether any figure can move before departure.

A reputable partner will set these out in writing. Tell us your route and dates and we will return pricing with the airport charges made clear.
