Customs and immigration
on private flights

Private travel does not exempt you from border control, but it does change how it happens. This guide explains how customs and immigration work on private international flights and what to prepare.

The basics

You still clear the border

Flying privately does not remove the legal requirement to clear customs and immigration when you cross a border. You still need valid passports for every passenger, and any visas required for your destination and for any country where you stop.

The difference is in the experience rather than the obligation. The formalities are usually handled in a calmer, more private setting, but the same rules on documents, goods, and declarations apply as they would on any international journey.

Where it happens

Clearing at the private terminal

On many private international flights, customs and immigration are handled at the private terminal rather than in the main airport hall. In some cases officers meet the aircraft, and in others you visit a dedicated clearance area at the FBO.

How this works depends on the country, the airport, and the time of day. Not every airport offers customs for private flights at all hours, so the process is confirmed in advance for your specific route.

Documents

Paperwork and advance notice

For international charter the operator usually files the required passenger information and arrival notices in advance, including passenger manifests and any advance passenger information the destination requires. Your role is to provide accurate passenger details and to carry valid travel documents.

Keep passports and any visas to hand for each passenger, including children. Having documents ready helps the clearance move quickly once you land.

Special cases

Goods, pets, and declarations

The usual rules on declaring goods apply. If you are carrying items of value, gifts, or amounts of cash above the local threshold, these may need to be declared. Bringing a pet across a border has its own requirements, which we cover in our guide to flying private with pets.

When in doubt, declare. Border officers treat private travellers under the same law as anyone else, and clear, honest declarations keep the process simple.

Plan ahead

Confirm the process for your route

Because customs availability and procedures vary by airport, it is worth confirming the arrangements for your specific trip, including which airports offer clearance, the hours, and any advance notice needed.

Tell us your route and dates when you enquire and we will route your enquiry to vetted charter partners who can confirm the customs process at each end and return an indicative price band.
