Flying private changes the airport experience entirely. This guide explains what an FBO is, how arrival and departure work, and what to expect from the private terminal at each end of your trip.
FBO stands for fixed base operator. It is the private terminal and ground services business that looks after private flights at an airport. The FBO handles your arrival and departure, supports the crew, arranges fuelling, and provides the lounge and ground services that replace the main terminal experience.
An FBO is not the same as a charter operator. The operator flies the aircraft, while the FBO is the facility on the ground. Many airports have one or more FBOs, and the experience is broadly similar even though each is run independently.
For a private departure you typically arrive close to your scheduled time rather than hours ahead. You are greeted at the private terminal, security is handled discreetly, and the walk to the aircraft is short. At some locations a car can take you to the aircraft directly.
Because there are no long queues, the time between arriving at the terminal and being on board is usually brief. Your crew will guide you through the process and help with any documents for international travel.
On arrival the process is equally quick. You leave the aircraft into the private terminal, your luggage is brought to you, and onward transport can often meet you close to the aircraft where local rules allow.
For domestic flights you can usually be on your way within minutes. For international flights you will clear customs and immigration first, which is covered in our guide to customs on private flights.
Private terminals are designed for comfort and privacy. You can expect a quiet lounge, refreshments, and somewhere to work or wait in calm surroundings. Many FBOs offer meeting space, and crews use the facility to plan and prepare for the flight.
Service levels vary between locations, so if you have specific needs such as a private meeting room or particular ground transport, it is worth confirming in advance.
Some airports have several terminals or FBOs, so confirm which one you are using at each end. For international trips, check that customs and immigration are available at your chosen terminal and during your travel window, since hours can vary.
When you enquire, tell us your route and dates and we will route your enquiry to vetted charter partners who can confirm the terminal arrangements at each airport and return an indicative price band.
